The Immaculate Conception Parish church located in Elmhurst, IL. does Christmas decorating like no other church I’ve seen. It’s tastefully done without being overdone. I celebrated mass in 2017 and vowed (no pun intended) to come back and get a 3D tour to show off this beautiful space. Many thanks to Fr. Tom Paul and Fr. Christopher Lankford for allowing me to bring this to reality.
In the SS Peter & Paul Church sample on the left, two scans were used as the foundation. Several 2D photos were extracted from multiple 360 degree photos taken in various areas. These objects were then assembled into an auto tour. In this sample, the tour will start automatically after the sample loads. After the tour ends, you can explore, but, only between the two initial scans in front of the altar.
The Bed, Bath and Beyond scan was done as a proof-of-concept for a large retail space. There is an “As Seen on TV” section where several products in one row have Info Tags (aka MatterTags) that when clicked will display a picture or mini commercial for that product. Additionally, a link will be displayed allowing the viewer to be taken to Bed, Bath and Beyond’s website where they can purchase the product.
This makes for a unique shopping experience allowing a retailer to highlight certain products and then guide the viewer to a place where a purchase can easily be made.
You can view this scan by clicking on the picture on the right, or, by going the the following web address:
This also shows how a vanity URL can help to make a scanned space available quickly and without the need for a supporting website.

NO LIGHT EXPERIMENT
In the two examples below, I’ve scanned a small section of a basement two ways; first, with an artificial light source and no room lights. Then I re-scanned the same space without the artificial light source and normal room lighting. The results speak for themselves. The artificial light source is a battery-operated Bell & Howell 60-LED light bar.
So why scan with the lights off? One situation might be where there was damage (fire, flood, vandalism, etc.) which caused the power to be cut off. Documenting such a space might give insurance adjusters, repair estimators or lawyers a way to view the entire space as it exists in its entirety, not just a series of 2D photo stills to assess the damage. Additionally, the scan can be revisited whenever a question comes up regarding the original condition. This is just another way to show the versatility of Matterport 3D scans.
In the Mercedes S550 sample on the left, two scans were done inside the vehicle. This shows the ability to the 3D tour to scale in to smaller spaces. Several Info Tags (aka MatterTags) were also used to show the diverse types of content that can be displayed.
The Honda Odyssey EX on the right was a previously owned vehicle my daughter purchased. Lots of room and many features. I didn’t have much time to do this shoot and the lighting wasn’t ideal. It still shows how a Matterport tour can show details that you just can’t get in 2D photos.
